After nearly four years, we are winding down the Policy Leadership Initiative.
The initiative emerged from a tension I had experienced over more than a decade working on digital policy in Brussels: those most impacted by tech-facilitated harms are too often absent from the rooms where decisions are made.

The Spanish-speaking community faces unique accessibility challenges with technology. Most technology tools are built solely with English-language users in mind, and are often too costly for most migrant communities in California. This holds especially true among nonprofit organizations working in service of Latin@ communities.

La mayoría del tiempo, la comunidad latin@ enfrenta desafíos de acceso a la tecnología. Las herramientas tecnológicas han sido, y siguen siendo diseñadas para usuarios que hablan inglés, y también son muy costosas para las comunidades migrantes en California. Esto es especialmente cierto entre organizaciones sin fines lucrativos que trabajan en servicio de comunidades latin@s.
Escuchando a las organizaciones sin fines lucrativos a través del estado de California, nos dimos cuenta de la necesidad de una colaboración en diseñar y facilitar talleres tecnológicos en español. Para empezar, durante los meses de Marzo y Abril estuvimos localizando nuestros talleres de comunicación en linea ya existentes. After a week on the road, JC and I are back from this year's first California Training Roadshow. We ventured from the Bay to Bakersfield, then continued on to Los Angeles where we met Misty and hosted two interactive events with local nonprofits and organizers. To kick things off, fifteen people joined us on May 6th for the Social Justice Technology Skillshare. We started the day by creating a mind-map of what topics to address and questions to answer. An interesting distribution of topics emerged compared to previous years.
In early May, a few of us ventured down to Los Angeles to host a Social Justice Technology Skillshare. In one of the sessions, we explored what people learned while doing communications in service of community organizing efforts. We invited people to gather around a big piece of blank paper and populate it with their tips, challenges, and ambitions in applying online communications to on-the-ground efforts. The question that guided the conversation was:

El entrenamiento se enfoco en cubriendo comunicaciones en linea para organizadores comunitarios.
